Garland Quilt Guild
Community Service
Garland Quilt Guild seeks out community services to donate its
time and efforts. The Executive Board reviews the ideas for
community service and presents the next year’s focus to the
membership at large.
Our 2009 charities: Scottish Rite Hospital, Garland Police
Department, and SPCA.
City of Garland Police Department - Baby Quilts Project
Need: Baby Quilts.
Purpose: The donated quilts are kept in the trunks of Garland, Texas
police vehicles. When a police officer needs to remove a child from
a home or if a child is involved in an accident, the Garland police
officer has a quilt to offer the child to provide a little security
and comfort in a difficult situation.
Scottish Rite Hospital - Quilts Project
Need: Baby Quilts and Lap Quilts.
Purpose: Nurses at the Scottish Rite Hospital give the donated
quilts to children as they come out of surgery. Scottish Rite
provides treatment for children from newborn up to 18 years old. The
hospital needs donation quilts of all sizes but requests that the
donation quilts are no larger then lap size 45" X 56". This is an
excellent opportunity to use up some of your scrap fabrics that are
not juvenile prints since they also treat teens.
SPCA - Pillow and Small Quilt Project
Need: Pillows and small quilts
Purpose: The SPCA needs pillows and small quilts to use to take
photos of the animals to be adopted. When the animal is adopted, the
family will take the new pet home with them along with the quilt or
pillow. There is no specific size preference for the SPCA's donation
quilts or pillows. We believe the maximum size needed would be
36"x36" for a larger dog. The donation quilts do not need to be
quilted or tied and the pillows/quilts can be stuffed with fabric
scraps. QUILTERS DISPLAY THEIR WORK TO SENIORS
Several members of the Garland Quilt Guild held a mini quilt show
for the residents of Chambrel at Club Hill, senior living residence
in Garland on February 19, displaying over 40 quilts. The folks at
Chambrel also showed their quilts. Guild members discussed their
work with Chambrel residents and visitors explaining the different
techniques they used such as applique and paper piecing.
The event was organized by Chambrel's Sales and Marketing Department
Director Donna French, who also invited the public to attend. She
said that the residents enjoyed seeing all the quilts, and it was a
wonderful show.
